America Reads/America Counts  [Description]
  • In October 1997, The University of Texas at San Antonio joined the America Reads Program. This program is part of the national effort to ensure that all children learn to read well and independently by the third grade. College work-study students serve as tutors for this program. UTSA's America Reads Tutoring Program is a collaborative effort between the San Antonio Independent School District, the Office of P-20 Initiatives, and the Office of Financial Aid. Participating schools are all inner-city schools with high populations of minority and economically disadvantaged students surrounding the UTSA Downtown Campus.
College Entrance Examinations Test Prep Workshops  [Description]
  • The Test Preparatory Workshop programs are targeted at increasing the participation rate of those students that have been traditionally underserved and underrepresented in undergraduate and graduate programs at institutions of higher learning. Workshops offered include the SAT, GRE, GMAT, and LSAT. Students in these classes receive numerous hours of instruction in each respective section of the examination. A registration fee is required for participation.
Dream Runners  [Description]
  • The Office of P-20 Initiatives and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at UTSA have developed a collaborative program that focuses on the educational improvement and progress of San Antonio area elementary and middle school students. This program, called Dream Runners, focuses on the academic achievement and attendance of students through the engagement of extracurricular activities at the UTSA campuses. The program officially began in Spring of 2005. The program targets students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds in the 5th-8th grades. Additionally, the program focuses on those students who may be at a higher risk of experiencing academic difficulties, including low grade performance, low performance on tests, low school attendance and higher rates of dropping out of school.

Early College High School (ECHS)  [Description]
  • The Early College High School Initiative is a collaborative between UTSA, East Central, Southside and Southwest Independent School Districts, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, The Communities Foundation of Texas-Texas High School Project, and The University of Texas System. The initiative focuses on creating a learning community within the high school from which all participating students will graduate with 60 college credit hours at the same time they earn their high school diploma. Changing the structure of high school by compressing the number of years to attain a college degree, the Early College High School Initiative has the potential to save financial resources and to prepare students for entry into high skilled careers. Each academic year approximately three hundred students are selected to participate in this program, targeting those who have been traditionally underserved, underrepresented and first-generation college attendees. As of August 2005, approximately 580 students from the three campuses are participating in this program.
